NYLON - March 2009 - (Page 108) space invader: maison moschino For over two decades, the Italian label Moschino has thumbed its nose at fashion, creating whimsical attire that celebrates the very industry it cajoles. Now, the company is daring to dream big, literally, with Maison Moschino, a fanciful four-story hotel opening later this year in Rimini, Italy (that’s just outside of Milan). Erected from the ruins of a neoclassical railway station, the boutique contains 54 rooms and 15 suites that evoke lush, fairy-tale fantasies: The “Life Is a Bed of Roses” boudoir, for instance, features a bed covered with crimson petals, surrounded by alabaster walls. Moschino once provocatively wrote on its clothing, WHO’S TO SAY WHAT’S IN GOOD sofia’s choice Known for directing such movies as Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation, Sofia Coppola has always been one to create alluring yet simple images. But this spring, it’s not a feature film of hers that everyone is talking about—Coppola has designed an accessory capsule collection with Louis Vuitton. The line, inspired by “easy elegance,” consists of slouchy duffle bags, compact clutches, and ’70s-style wedge heels in tones like cobalt and jasper. “It’s great to be able to make exactly what you want,” says Coppola, adding, “I wanted classic colors for the day bag that would go with everything and that you wouldn’t get tired of. But not black.” The outcome— which is anything but trend-driven—uses supple calf leather and features gold piping embellishments. Coppola’s timeless sensibilities and Vuitton’s understated luxury blend perfectly to create purely elegant pieces. “My idea of Louis Vuitton was a company with great heritage and quality,” she says. “And working with them solidified this.” RAJNI LUCIENNE JACQUES For more information, see louisvuitton.com. down under “My inspiration is gathered from everywhere—it might be a wallpaper print in a five-star hotel, artwork, or beading on a sarong in a far-flung market stall,” explains Hussy designer Marie Hatzis about how visits to Bali influenced her line this season. Hussy, which was created by Hatzis at age 21— and has been on the forefront of the Australian fashion scene for over 14 years—is now launching in the good ol’ U.S.A. The “Exotic Escape” collection is a fresh breeze of eye-catching pieces in free-flowing fabrics and birdof-paradise colors. Coquettish mini-dresses, sophisticated kaftans, and cheeky jumpsuits— embellished with embroidery, frills, and metal studs—will appeal to any girl’s inner minx. “Hussy has always reflected my personal sense of style, and I believe it has become an iconic brand because it doesn’t follow the trends too much,” explains Hatzis. “You always have to have an eye on what the rest of the world is doing, of course, but put your own stamp on it.” MAI LYNN MILLER NGUYEN For more information, see hussy.com.au.
