NYLON - March 2009 - (Page 76) private icon: belle noir Imagine a speakeasy crowd at a ’70s disco, and all the anachronisms it implies: a black, netted cap worn with a sleek pantsuit; a rhinestone-encrusted tie reflecting a shiny blonde bob; crimson flapper lipstick; red press-on nails. Now imagine that look on one of America’s biggest movie stars, and you’ve got a good reference for Evelyn Mulwray, the (1974) mysterious femme fatale in Chinatown (1974). Played by Faye Dunaway, the elusive Evelyn knew how to make an impression: avenging her murdered husband in killer stilettos, seducing detective Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) with porcelain-doll curls, and hiding a deep, dark secret under the shade of a sharp beige fedora (Oh, and by the way: Her husband was also her father). Eventually, she helps uncover a huge scandal involving the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and wouldn’t you know it—that’s when the hat comes down— shortly before Evelyn does, shot in the back by the LAPD. 7 6 1 2 3 4 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. top by derek lam, $1,750; skirt by derek lam, $4,250; blazer by french connection, $228; top by hugo, $195; earrings by giles & brother by philip crangi, $63; chanel rouge hydrabase creme lipstick in fire, $28.50; shoe by christian louboutin, $1,095; hat by patricia underwood, price upon request; nars nail polish in chinatown, $16. 5 076 still lifes: jonathon kambouris. chinatown: courtesy of mptv.net. http://www.mptv.net
