CHER IN MERMAIDS Cher started her illustrious career as the better-looking but much more bashful half of a duo, alongside a bowl-cut-Bono. The mismatched pair of singing spouses scored countless Billboard hits in the ’60s and earned much critical acclaim for their Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour variety program. But by the mid-’70s when their relationship ﬁzzled, so did their career… as a duo, at least. Cher forged ahead as a solo artist, and over the decades that followed was responsible for some of the most memorable singles (“Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves,” “If I Could Turn Back Time,” “Believe”), outﬁts (a certain Bob Mackie rhinestoneencrusted midriff-baring outﬁt complete with headdress that had jaws dropping at the 1986 Oscars), and relationships (Gene Simmons, Val Kilmer, a 22-year-old bagel baker). But her big screen performances have been just as memorable. Though it was her turn as a prickly, lovelorn Brooklyn woman in Moonstruck that earned her an Academy Award, it was in Mermaids that audiences saw a more lighthearted side of Cher. As Rachel Flax, a smart-mouthed ’60s-era woman with loose morals and skintight dresses, Cher did a brilliant job playing mom to a young Winona Ryder (the confused do-gooder whose faith can’t mask her raging hormones) and Christina Ricci (the precocious professional swimmer in training).
