NYLON - April 2008 - (Page 124) SEOUL FOOD MORTAL BEAUTY KOKO SATO’S LIFE CALLING HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH DEATH. FULL NAME: Koko Sato HOMETOWN: Tokyo, Japan JOB TITLE: Funeral Makeup Artist HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS LINE OF WORK? My father, a doctor in the field of forensic medicine, asked me, “If you can make people look like they’re dead, why can’t you make the deceased look more alive?” (At the time I was a makeup artist and graphic designer in New York.) He said, “You can help the family who has lost their loved one to look forward.” My life changed completely after experiencing 9/11, and I took it as a sign and decided to use my ability to help people from that time on. WHEN DID YOU FIRST SEE A DEAD PERSON? When I was 17, at my father’s work. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR JOB: Besides doing makeup on dead people, I am also the funeral makeup study lecturer at the Funeral Science College, which opened in Japan five years ago. ARE THERE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DOING MAKEUP ON THE DEAD VERSUS THE LIVING? Yes! Big time! The living have temperature, sebum, and water and most makeup products are made to look good only on skin that is alive. With the dead, since the skin is very fragile, if you use even the same pressure the skin will peel off. IS THAT WHY YOU DEVELOPED YOUR OWN LINE OF PRODUCTS FOR THE SKIN OF THE DECEASED? Yes. I produced the cosmetics line [Delfino] after researching the passage that the deceased’s skin takes. It also is the first product range of its kind to provide defense measures against infection. DOES YOUR JOB FREAK PEOPLE OUT? Yes! But more like in an impressed way. It becomes a good chance to talk about life and death, and how you want to live… since we all die, I think it’s nice to talk about it with people. WERE YOU A FAN OF THE TV SHOW SIX FEET UNDER? (Laughing) Actually my ex-boyfriend’s mother showed it to me when I was still thinking about whether to jump into this world and I loved it! Now I show it to my students. It’s no secret that when you feel like total crap because you haven’t slept in days, your skin is the first to tell on you. (Ah, dark circles and grayish pallor, we meet again.) Make a habit out of this kind of behavior and it’ll take more than a solid eight hours of sleep to revive the radiance of yore. Not that a moisturizer can miraculously bring your complexion back from the dead, but when paired with, say, a nap, Erborian’s ginseng- and yuza-based products can at least stop people from asking if you’re sick. Thousands of years of Korean medicinal know-how went into creating these super creamy, deliciously citrus-smelling creams that are formulated to fight skin fatigue with circulation-stimulating herbs and vitamins. The yuza line—including a day and night lotion, and a fantastic little balm that treats chapped lips and dry cuticles—is suitable for normal to oily skin and utilizes the fruit’s vitamin C to even out skin tone and fight damaging free radicals. The ginseng set— day, night, and eye cream—increases cellular turnover, making it good for aging or dry skin lacking that little sum’n sum’n. Because when it comes to a fresh-faced, I-roll-out-of-bed-this-luminous kind of glow, sometimes you have to fake it ’til you make it. COURTNEY DUNLOP Available exclusively at Space NK. dress for success Over the summer my best friend had gained two things: a new set of contact lenses and a new set of hormones. Paul: I could be home right now making time with Julie Zeller. Kevin: You’re dreaming, pal. Paul: I could have probably gotten to second base by now. Kevin: Oh yeah right, like you’d even know what to do! Paul: I know what to do. Kevin: Gimme a break. Paul: Yeah? Well it just so happens that I’ve got a certain 25 cent insurance policy. The famous Pfeiffer condom––Paul had been bragging about it since he got it in July. - The Wonder Years Condoms may not be widely available in schools (thanks to our moronic administration), but they have long held a prominent role in the pop culture spectrum. When Donna and David finally decided to do the deed on 90210, she made sure to bust out a condom; Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes always affixed a rubber to her glasses for TLC performances; and even Madonna (someone we know has an, ahem, healthy sexual appetite) filmed a PSA in 1988 promoting safe sex, entitled “Love Won’t Protect You.” But condom usage was being endorsed way before Aaron Spelling. Casanova himself spread the word about the crude sheep-gut sheath he liked to fasten on with a ribbon before having intercourse, and during WWII the army issued videos warning soldiers traveling overseas to protect themselves against disease with the slogan: “Don’t forget to put it on, before you put it in.” And for every advancement in condom efficacy, there was a ridiculous gimmick––condom lollipops, anyone? Now Proper Attire has created a gimmick that is actually good. The new line of stylish condoms––each package is decorated with a fig leaf print––is designed to make women feel more comfortable about buying and carrying protection, and even comes with a clever tag line: Required for Entry. Besides looking good peeking out of your pocket, you can also feel good buying Proper Attire because the proceeds go directly to Planned Parenthood.
