When I was in eighth grade I had a short peasant dress that I’d wear with knee-high socks and girly work boots from Wild Pair (a popular New Jersey shoe store at the time). The dress––which my mother loathed––was a swirl of colors including blues, greens, and reds, with rufﬂes along the hem and patterns that made it look like a quilt. Every time I wore it to school––usually on Fridays since I knew I was hanging out that night––the guys would always talk to me in stoner voices, saying things like “Hey groovy chick, wanna toke up?” The joke got old, but my love for that frock lives on. Every once in a while ’60s hippie fashion gets reincarnated, and seeing it on the runways reminds me that the era was not just about drugs and experimentation; it stood for something much bigger, a movement that transformed society. From featuring fringed edges and colorful patterns on caftans to using tons of chiffon, various designers have interpreted the hippie getup in many different ways. This season D&G, Maurizio Pecoraro, Prada, and Roberto Cavalli, to name a few, all got the bug and embraced peasant dresses, bell-bottoms, and long prairie skirts. But it’s the peasant dress––long or short––that seems to be the one item that women gravitate towards time after time, most likely because it ﬂatters so many different body types. Updated versions hug the body instead of hiding a woman’s shape, and the patterns––whether they are ﬂowers, animal prints, or crazy graphics––give extra pizzazz, while rufﬂes further enhance femininity. Jazz a peasant dress up with heels, keep it “granola” by pairing it with Birkenstocks, or be quirky and wear it with moccasins: No matter how you sport it, you’ll always look effortlessly cool. Fashion is cyclical, of course, and the fact that all styles get recycled (some more than others) means that the hippie revival will inevitably come around again. But I’m psyched that it’s making a strong comeback now, because I already know what I’ll be wearing on the ﬁrst warm, sunny day that presents itself this summer. And as I walk down the street, I hope that I’ll still get catcalls like “Hey baby, wanna get groovy tonight?” RAJNI LUCIENNE JACQUES
