NYLON - April 2009 - (Page 98) team work Uniqlo is right up there with Target when it comes to putting out covetable collaborations with indie designers—past participants have included Phillip Lim and Alexander Wang—and this season, the megabrand is partnering with Steven Alan and Shipley & Halmos. “I just thought I was in good company,” says Alan of his decision to join forces with the company. “Unlike a lot of mass merchants, Uniqlo has great integrity.” Quality is paramount to Alan, who usually designs his own prints for his signature easy, boyish clothes like boxy rompers and crisp, pin-tucked tunics. His creations for Uniqlo harken back to another era; he found inspiration in a ’60s high-school yearbook. “It’s collegiate,” he says, “but kinda rebel.” Meanwhile, Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos, who launched their own collection last year after successfully designing the pared-down duds of Trovata, are also happy to team up with the Japanese giant. “We shop at Uniqlo,” says Halmos, “and our girlfriends shop there, too.” For their spring collection, the duo hand-designed mosaics using pastel tones for free-floating tops and shifts that herald a chilledout vibe. “There’s a modern feel,” says Halmos, “clean, straight, and structured.” SARAH MASLIN NIR For more information, see uniqlo.com. heart wood, and are decorated with streaks of shiny brass for angular bangles, pendants, block rings, and dangly earrings.
