NYLON - May 2008 - (Page 114) L.A. CONFIDENTIAL There’s more to the City of Angels than freeways and the Walk of Fame, but do you know where to find it? Here, six Angelenos spill their neighborhoods’ best-kept secrets. Photographed by Amanda Milius and Ye Rin Mok HOLLYWOOD DANNY MASTERSON (A.K.A. DJ MOMJEANS) SAYS HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD. AS TOLD TO CRYSTAL MEERS. Hollywood is the raddest neighborhood in L.A. I’ve lived here since I moved out from New York in ’93. Hollywood is young and exciting and there’s nothing plastic or showy about any part of it. I can walk to the Henry Fonda Theatre Music Box (6126 Hollywood Blvd.), where every band that I love, from Bloc Party to Midlake to My Morning Jacket, plays. The sound is fantastic. Every week, you can find me at the 101 Coffee Shop (6145 Franklin Ave.), and at Pimai Thai (5833 Franklin Ave.). They just redid the place so it’s cool and modern. If I want Mexican food and my favorite margarita, I go to El Compadre (7408 W. Sunset Blvd.). It always sounds silly when I say this, but my favorite Japanese restaurant is Geisha House (6633 Hollywood Blvd.). Yes, I do own it, but it’s still packed after three years because the food is great: The spicy tuna on crispy rice shits on all the others in the city. I finally stole my jazz night back from West Hollywood. Now, The Kid’s Cotton Club is at Teddy’s at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel (7000 Hollywood Blvd.) every Thursday. But remember, to see the best jazz players in L.A., guys have to be in suits and ties, and girls have to be in dresses. At Dim Mak Tuesdays at Cinespace (6356 Hollywood Blvd.), bands play and I sometimes DJ an indie/electro set. People go to get soaking wet and dance and have a great time. Hollywood’s still got a good amount of grit and grime, but I like the type of people that live here and the style. It still has a lot of energy. Hollywood is like a little baby NYC in L.A.; it’s a melting pot. EAT Cactus 950 Vine St. The spot for late-night carne asada tacos. Cobras and Matadors 7615 W. DRINK La Poubelle 5907 Franklin Ave. A neighborhood bar for 35 years. Piano Bar 6429 Selma Ave. A jukebox and wacky performances. SHOP Original Penguin 8215 Melrose Ave. Perfect casual duds.
