NYLON - May 2008 - (Page 34) behind the scenes UNDER COVER: LEIGHTON AND BLAKE Gossip Girl best friends Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf couldn’t be more different––one is a free-spirited rebel, the other an uppity queen bee. And their onscreen style is just as disparate––Serena takes more fashion risks (think Sienna Miller and Kate Moss) than prim, buttoned-up Blair. Photographer Marvin Scott Jarrett wanted to infuse some of their characters’ contrasting style sensibilities into the double cover shoot of actresses Leighton Meester (Blair) and Blake Lively (Serena). For Lively, stylist Daniela Jung stuck to the miniskirts and short shorts Serena favors, but gave them more of a punk attitude––Lively was so enamored of a studded black LaRok mini, that Jung gave it to her as a gift. For Meester, Jung sought to complement her doll-like features by focusing on colorful, distinctly proportioned dresses that were a bit more playful than what Blair usually gravitates to. Two very different girls, two very different makeup looks. Lively’s sun-kissed complexion was highlighted by a palette of warm neutrals and peaches. While Meester’s milky-white skin was the perfect backdrop for Old Hollywood’s favorite makeup item: rich, scarlet lipstick. Lively: Mineral Power Foundation, Expertwear Eye Shadow in Luscious Sorbet, Mineral Power Blush in Original Rose, and Shine Seduction Glossy Lipcolor in Apricot Aura. Meester: Define-A-Lash Volume Mascara in Very Black, Define-ALine Eyeliner in Ebony Black, Dream Mousse Blush in Peach Satin, Moisture Extreme Lipcolor in Royal Red. All, Maybelline New York. photos: stephen walker. still lifes: chika kobari. BEAUTY NOTE: FOR THEIR LOOK TRY:
