NYLON - May 2008 - (Page 50) 1 2 3 4 ISN’T IT IRONIC? It’s a weird world out there, and nobody knew this better than Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) and Edith (Thora Birch) in Ghost World. Fresh out of high school, best friends Rebecca and Edith had the kind of special understanding that made it possible for them to put up with the idiots around them. The girls leveled their sarcastic barbs at “authentic” ’50s diners that blasted rap music, the infamous white-boy blues band Blueshammer, and the shirtless, nunchuckwielding freak who worked at the gas station. At the very least, the follies of their boring suburban town provided something to laugh at. “This is so bad it’s almost good,” Rebecca says at one point. “This is so bad it’s gone past good and back to bad again,” counters Edith. Their fashion sense was a mix of weird vintage and just plain weird (Edith’s cat mask), and even though they did not set out to be fashionable, they were. Channel their quirky style with creepers, cat-eyed glasses, and a bit of green hair dye. Then when asked how your new job is going, just smile and say, as Rebecca does, “Some people are OK; mostly I just feel like poisoning everybody.” 6 5 7 private icon: ghost world 1. skirt by luella, $330; 2. electric lizard hair color cream by manic panic, $10.50; 3. top by a.p.c., $140; 4. glasses by cutler & gross, $350; 5. shirt by luxirie by lrg, $49; 6. jacket by d&g, $1,875; 7. asphyxia eye shadow by urban decay, $16; 8. shoe by maxmara, $565. 8 still lifes: chika kobari. photo courtesy of the everett collection.
