STREETS OF GOLD Eliquat, sim vel YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU’LL FIND ON CANAL STREET—THE GRIMY, CROWDED THOROUGHFARE THAT CUTS THROUGH NEW YORK’S CHINATOWN. CORY KENNEDY DODGES THE TOURISTS TO FIND THE PERFECT OUTFIT. PHOTOGRAPHED BY JEFF OLSEN Most New Yorkers don’t consider Canal Street to be a place where they can find cool new duds. It is notorious for selling counterfeit designer bags (think Prada, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton), fragrances (both authentic and bootleg), I LOVE NY T-shirts, and jewelry (especially those ’80s name-plate door-knocker earrings). The street is a tourist’s dream, with all its trinkets and flashy items just waiting to be bought, but I set myself a challenge: Amongst all this gaudiness, would I be able to put together a decent outfit for under $30? Early one Saturday morning, I ventured to the infamous stretch. I walked up and down to scope out a few places I thought would be a good starting point for unearthing the main pieces of my outfit. In one store I found a rack of striped shirts, and tried on a few different colors. The light blue and red one felt too much like a TGI Friday’s uniform, so I decided on a black- and-white option. By cuffing the sleeves and leaving some buttons open, I created a preppy look; I’m usually not a prepster, but I liked it. Yet I knew I had to jazz it up with some accessories. Soon enough I found some great scarves for around $7. I opted for a burnt-sienna one with a swirl pattern because it clashed with the striped shirt, making my outfit a little more fun. I added a really cute hat and found a cool bracelet that is now my favorite accessory: It has a beetle in it and glows in the dark. With my ensemble complete, I was ready to show it off, so I headed out to meet some friends. I’m no longer a naysayer of purchasing items on this touristy thoroughfare. In fact, I’m living proof that you can still look good after a day of shopping on Canal Street.
