NYLON - May 2008 - (Page 60) CREATURE COMFORTS GEREN LOCKHART’S NICHOLS CANYON HOME IS SURROUNDED BY TREES—AND SHOWS HER APPRECIATION FOR WILD THINGS OF EVERY SORT. BY CRYSTAL MEERS. PHOTOGRAPHED BY CEL JARVIS “I realized today the house has a theme,” says Geren Lockhart as she opens wide the door to her Nichols Canyon home, dressed in layers of clothes from her Geren Ford collection, a Chanel J12 watch, and Gucci shoes. “It’s the house of woodland creatures and unused sex toys.” She’s not kidding. Around every corner of this contemporary California hideaway, there’s a tiny turtle or leather blindfold, golden handcuffs or turquoise ceramic panther, and it’s clear that Lockhart’s approach to home décor and clothing design are the same: Every little detail counts. Less than a year ago, Lockhart was living in Mi Casa, the historic Spanish-style apartment building in West Hollywood where she started her line in 2004. It wasn’t long before both the designer and her company outgrew the tiny space, so she relocated the bulk of the clothing operation from her living room to a downtown studio, and then decided to move herself. The house hunt was brief: “This was the first place I looked at,” she says, “As soon as I walked in, I knew that I wanted it. I’m dramatic like that.” Built in 1954, Lockhart’s home nods to the post-and-beam stylings and the indoor/outdoor living concepts that were popular mid-century. “I knew the place had good bones,” she says. “We just basically peeled off the skin and it was easy to change the cosmetic side of things.” Her mix of timeless furniture includes Eames signature pieces, as well as functional basics from CB2; in a range of neutrals, it creates the ideal backdrop for Lockhart’s massive collection of art and the decorative bits and pieces placed throughout. “Growing up, I always had original art as a part of my life, so instead of that being the first thing I bought when I could start purchasing things, top to bottom: the sunsplashed living room; lockhart in her yard; a tooled leather blindfold; stacks of fiction and a tiny burro. hair and makeup by adrienne herbert for celestineagency.com using redken and nars. nesting
