NYLON - May 2008 - (Page 90) DEAR JOHN WE KNOW IT’S HARD TO TAKE YOUR EYES OFF OF MISS MOLLY, BUT SOME OF THE CHARACTERS SHE SHARED SCREEN TIME WITH IN JOHN HUGHES’S FAMOUS FLICKS ARE SIMPLY UNFORGETTABLE. ALLY SHEEDY IN THE BREAKFAST CLUB She may have played a “basket case” in The Breakfast Club, but in reality Ally Sheedy has always been more of a “brain.” Born and raised in New York, when she wasn’t doing demipliés for the American Ballet Theater, Sheedy spent much of her time as a child writing. But her musings didn’t just end up on the family fridge—at the tender age of 12, Sheedy’s book about the relationship between a mouse and Queen Elizabeth I, She Was Nice to Mice, was published by McGraw Hill and went on to become a bestseller. Besides some major cafeteria bragging rights, the book earned her assignment offers from the Village Voice and Ms. and a guest spot on The Tonight Show. And this was all before she even started acting. Once she did, Sheedy quickly climbed the ranks—a recurring role on Hill Street Blues prompted her jump to the big screen with a part as Sean Penn’s troubled girlfriend in Bad Boys (1983). And by 1985 she had been crowned (much to her chagrin) a member of the legendary brat pack (along with Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, and Molly Ringwald). Sheedy was surrounded by her fellow packers in The Breakfast Club, John Hughes’s seminal glimpse at high school social castes which remains as relevant today as it was in 1985—it was recently ranked #1 on Entertainment Weekly’s list of the 50 Best High School Movies. Her character, Allison Reynolds, the cereal sandwich-loving compulsive liar who carries a giant bag everywhere in case she wants to run away, was a hero for teenage freaks the world over. We can forgive Hughes for giving Allison that awful girly makeover at the film’s end because he also bestows her with the movie’s best line: “When you grow up, your heart dies.” REVLON SUGAR SUGAR IN SNOWFLAKE Not to be ingested… $14.95, AT DRUGSTORES.
