NYLON - June 2008 - (Page 26) letter from the editor This is the third year that we’ve partnered with MySpace for our June/July music issue. It’s a complete reinvention of our normal format, so it always has everyone working very long hours and putting in extra energy—but, as we all love music so much, it’s a lot of fun, too. The idea behind the issue, especially the NYLON School of Rock package (page 146), was to encourage our readers to make their own music, so I hope you find a lot of inspiration in these pages. Don’t think you have to be Thom Yorke to record an amazing album and get it out there: Technology really has made it an even playing field. Check out the videos that go along with the bands featured in this issue online, and you’ll pick up even more tips—we talked to both major icons like Kim Gordon and Courtney Love, as well as to newer artists such as Ladytron and the Virgins. Getting together with Courtney Love and Dirty Harry was definitely an intense experience: I arrived at Courtney’s house in Hollywood at 4 p.m., which was when the shoot was meant to begin, and when I left five hours later it still hadn’t started yet. The next day, I learned that the rest of the NYLON team didn’t get home until 6 a.m. As for our cover star, we heard the Scarlett Johansson album early on, and felt we wanted to support her in a big way. Scarlett fits in with the theme of the issue really well: She’s someone whose record defies expectations, and she’s pretty much like any girl who sets out to make music…she just happens to be one of the most famous actresses in the world. Right now, we’re all about music: our new book, PLAY: The NYLON Book of Music, is in stores, and as you read this, the NYLON Summer Music Tour is in full swing. We’re even going to bring this issue to life in L.A. the first week of June with a party and gallery installation. We love being turned on to new artists, so if we missed your favorite band, please write to us and tell us all about them—we’re always ready to listen.
