NYLON - June 2008 - (Page 32) behind the scenes UNDERCOVER: SCARLETT JOHANSSON For NYLON’s June/July cover, photographer Marvin Scott Jarrett and stylist Daniela Jung were determined to give newly minted singer Scarlett Johansson a rock ’n’ roll makeover. “When I thought about the styling,” says Jung, “I wanted her to still have the essence of Scarlett, but be more tough and cool, and less glammed up.” That translated into ink-black vinyl leggings, killer heels, a cropped leather motorcycle jacket, and piles of vintage rock T-shirts. Jung’s favorite—a David Bowie one she had brought without realizing that Bowie is actually featured on Johansson’s album—may not have made it into the story, but it did get a thumbs up from our cover star. Her record, a collection of Tom Waits songs, served as the soundtrack for the day, but it was a different female musician who inspired Jung’s cover styling—the silky, mustard-colored Jean Paul Gaultier tunic was a nod to Stevie Nicks. BEAUTY NOTE: All those magazine articles waxing on about Johansson's perfect pout aren’t exaggerating: This girl’s got amazing lips! So makeup artist Matthew Vanleeuwen painted them, er, scarlet, and kept the rest of her face clean so they remained the focal point. FOR HER LOOK TRY: True Match Foundation in Soft Ivory, High Drama Volumizing Mascara in Ultimate Black, Color Truth Eyeliner in Black, True Match Super Blendable Blush in Rosy Outlook, Cream Shadow Paint in Secretive, Shine Struck Liquid Lipcolor in Turbulent. All, L’Oréal. still lifes: jonathon kambouris. photograph: stephen walker.
