NYLON - June 2008 - (Page 50) 1 2 3 4 myspace.com : madonna / Desperately seeking Madonna? 5 6 IDENTITY THEFT 7 Life can get boring sometimes, and Roberta Glass (Rosanna Arquette), who’s married to the self-proclaimed “Spa King of New Jersey,” desperately needs a change. So instead of writing more dull excerpts in her diary, she becomes fixated on a mystery woman named Susan (Madonna) who she reads about in the personals of a New York City newspaper. Roberta’s obsession with Susan peaks when a mystery man’s ad, titled ‘Desperately Seeking Susan,’ proposes a rendezvous with her. So what does the humdrum housewife do? She heads to Manhattan to witness the meeting, and a series of wacky events ensue––she gets hit in the head which results in amnesia, finds Susan’s suitcase and gets kitted out in her clothes (causing her to get mistaken for her girl crush), falls in love with Dez (Aidan Quinn), and has murderous mobsters on her trail. Desperately Seeking Susan’s plot may have many twists and turns, but the fashion is straightup awesome: think piles of bangles, huge black hair-bows, leather pants, and vintage suit jackets. Watching a suburban housewife transform into a downtown babe––especially with Madonna’s hit song “Get into the Groove” as part of the soundtrack––is reason enough to watch this ’80s classic over and over again. 8 9 private icon: desperately seeking susan 1. glove by chanel, $7,150; 2. sunglasses by ralph lauren, $210; 3. lipstick by wet ‘n’ wild, $1; 4. blazer by hugo boss, $995; 5. bra by marlies dekkers, $112; 6. pants by insight, $60; 7. bracelets by guess by marciano, $30; 8. boot by marc by marc jacobs, $940; 9. hair gel by l.a. looks, $3. still lifes: chika kobari. photo courtesy of the everett collection. http://myspace.com/madonna
