NYLON - June 2008 - (Page 60) LET LOVE RULE THIS TIME AROUND, CARTIER’S FAMED LOVE BRACELET IS ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC. BY RAJNI LUCIENNE JACQUES. PHOTOGRAPHED BY CAMERON KRONE Love is a universal language, and renowned French jewelry house Cartier speaks it very well. In 1970, Cartier created the Love bracelet, which has become one of the world’s most recognized and celebrated jewelry designs. The two-piece gold wristlet––attached by screws that have to be bolted together in order to close––was conceived as a symbol of undying adoration. And as part of its initial launch, Cartier presented “his-and-hers” bracelets to 25 famous couples––among them, Ali McGraw and Steve McQueen, Cary Grant and Dyan Cannon, and Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton who, um, all later divorced––and performed a ceremony at their 5th Avenue boutique where the couples locked each other up. These days, the Love bracelet has an even bigger agenda. A new version––two miniature gold bands linked on a silk cord called the Love Charity bracelet––was introduced in 2006 to celebrate a philanthropic pledge, and this year’s charity ambassadors know a thing or two about getting into the groove. R&B singer Ashanti, pop-punkers Good Charlotte, and rapper Eve have all lent their faces to support the Love Charity bracelet. Every artist has their own color of cord, and proceeds from each bracelet support the charity of their choice. Good Charlotte is backing the Richie Madden Children’s Foundation (which provides grants and raises awareness about issues like healthcare and education for disadvantaged children), Ashanti supports the Glen Cove Boys and Girls Club in New York (which offers services like homework help and computer education to teens), and Eve is representing Women In Transition (a group that offers empowerment counseling and referrals to women in Philadelphia who are affected by domestic violence or substance abuse). “Our goal with this endeavor is not only to raise funds,’’ explain Joel and Benji Madden of Good Charlotte, “but to encourage young people to get involved.” It’s not the first time a high-end design house has enlisted musicians to promote their brand in order to capture a youthful audience. But it is a first for Cartier to enlist only musicians to promote the celebrated Love Charity bracelet. And if using these personalities helps influence a new g generation to g involved in get charitable causes then we’re sold. e’re myspace.com : ashanti / myspace.com : goodcharlotte / myspace.com : eve / Log on and check out what’s next for these philanthropic musicians. stylist: angelica pieser-nelson. makeup: lisa aharon for stila cosmetics. hair: anthony campbell using cutler. model: thayesse at supreme. top by publicka. bracelets by cartier. http://myspace.com/ashanti http://myspace.com/goodcharlotte http://myspace.com/eve
