NYLON - August 2008 - (Page 116) HIGH TIMES THE FOXY LADIES OF DAZED AND CONFUSED MAY GET THE MUNCHIES, BUT IT DOESN’T SHOW. Finishing high school is definitely a good excuse to party. Not that the characters in Dazed and Confused ever need much of an excuse. Richard Linklater’s classic flick— ranked #3 on Entertainment Weekly ’s list of the all-time best high school movies—captures 24 hours of the, er, high jinks of a group of Texas teens in 1976. Linklater was inspired by his own teenage experience, and so realistic is his cinematic portrayal of hazing, toking, and trying (and often failing) to get laid, that three of his high school classmates sued him—it seems the director neglected to give his buddies different last names in the film. But Dazed ’s authenticity comes not only from the spot-on plot line and dialogue—the word “man” is used 203 times—but also the killer soundtrack. Linklater actually devoted much of his film’s budget to securing the rights to ’70s rock nuggets like “Fox on the Run” by Sweet, “Love Hurts” by Nazareth, and “Slow Ride” by Foghat—the music essentially becomes a central character in the film. And while, among the actual characters, some of the dudes are truly memorable (Wiley Wiggins, sigh), it is the cast of smoking hot ladies that prove most irresistible. Michelle (Milla Jovovich) with her silky, center-parted hair and perennially bloodshot eyes is every hippy boy’s wet dream; sassy geek Cynthia (Marissa Ribisi) manages to make an Annie ’fro look cool; Mitch’s over-protective big sis Jodi (Michelle Burke), with her feathered hair and skintight jeans, is smart, popular, and hot; golden-limbed, pouty-lipped Simone (Joey Lauren Adams) is the most adorable school slut ever; and, our favorite, Darla “wipe that face off your head, bitch” Marks (Parker Posey) proves that being bad can look really good.
