NYLON Magazine - September 2007 - (Page 90) LIVING LARGE KNOCKOUT SHOULDERS MAKE THEIR RETURN. BY ANDREA CUSICK. PHOTOGRAPHED BY DAN MARTENSEN Just when you think a trend is gone, buried, and eradicated from your wardrobe (even, in extreme cases, eradicated from your photo album), back it comes with enough punch to rival a heavyweight boxer. This fall, said trend is shoulder pads. The sort of all-empowering shoulder boulders that, during their ’80s heyday, served as a badge for independent career-focused woman. Melanie Griffith in Working Girl, Shannon Doherty in Heathers— not to mention the entire cast of Dynasty — practiced this form of power dressing. When I was growing up in London during that era, even stay-at-home-mothers were adopting the Princess Diana uniform: unflattering jeans, a navy shoulder-padded blazer, and a white T-shirt (often with removable shoulder enhancers). But this fad wasn’t born in the ’80s. Elsa Schiaparelli is credited for igniting the trend when she created a wide-shouldered suit for Marlene Dietrich that was subsequently copied all over Hollywood in the ’30s and ’40s. As shoulder pads rise at Margiela, Balenciaga, Preen, and Christopher Kane, the new incarnations are, thankfully, a little less Alexis Carrington than their Me Decade predecessors. In metal-spiked, pointed, and asymmetrical varieties, the latest styles are more playful and, well, fun. Should you need further convincing, remember that broader shoulders give the illusion of smaller hips, a teenier waist, and great posture—even if they are aided by a layer of triangular foam. the observer stylist: ken baldwin. hair: dennis gotsoulos for redken urban experiment at magnetny.com. makeup: munemi using est cosmetics at see management. model: bojana panic at women. jacket by maison martin margiela, jumper by acne jeans, sunglasses by selima optique.
