NYLON - September 2008 - (Page 168) FIRE WALK WITH ME Russ Tamblyn, who played the wonderfully eccentric Dr. Jacoby on Twin Peaks, reflects on his involvement with David Lynch’s masterpiece. Illustration by Malin Bergström I hadn’t done any significant acting work in years when I suddenly landed a strange and demented television pilot titled Northwest Passage in the late eighties. I was a big fan of its extraordinary creator David Lynch, but, poring over the bizarre script, little did I realize that I was about to become part of television history in a quirky TV noir series that would later be re-titled Twin Peaks. I was determined to make the most of the one scene I had to do, and in preparation for the Seattle shoot, I packed some cotton in my suitcase. I figured the eccentric Dr. Jacoby, who heard peoples’ problems all day, was really a loner pervert who didn’t like listening to anyone when he was out of the office, so he’d stuff cotton in his ears and silently slink around in heavenly Hawaiian bliss. For my time off, I packed a swimsuit and some new leather Pivetta hiking boots for walking in the woods. While flying over Washington’s beautiful landscape, I gazed out the window at the vast timberland below. I couldn’t help but think about that gutsy airplane hijacker, D.B. Cooper, who parachuted out of a big commercial jet with a large bag of stolen cash and landed down there somewhere. The FBI never did find him. Soon, after landing at Seattle International Airport, a company car was to take me to what I was hoping would be the Salish Lodge & Spa, a five-star hotel just 30 miles from Seattle. From there, you could hear the roar of Snoqualmie Falls, where the whitewater tumbled over 300feet high granite cliffs into the emerald river canyon below. This is the same lodge and waterfall that ended up in the opening titles of every Twin Peaks episode, and I was looking forward to having the whole weekend there to swim, hike, and relax before filming on Monday. TO DIE FOR MARISSA COOPER (MISCHA BARTON) ON THE O.C. But hold on! The car pulled into a motel next to a freeway. There was no swimming pool… no woods…. and no waterfall. It was an industrial area without even a shopping mall or restaurant around. This was where I was to spend the weekend? I walked outside to look for a tree but there was only the freeway. Then, it began to rain, and it continued to rain all weekend. Early Monday morning, I was driven to an abandoned hospital a few miles away to SCOTT SCANLON (DOUGLAS EMERSON) ON BEVERLY HILLS, 90210 LIFEGUARD STEPHANIE HOLDEN (ALEXANDRA PAUL) ON BAYWATCH SOMETIMES A CHARACTER’S MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT IS WHEN THEY KICK THE BUCKET. Marissa, much to viewers’ surprise, was killed at the end of season three when the SUV she and Ryan were riding in spun out of control. Ryan valiantly pulls her from the wreckage and she dies in his arms. The teen drama started off with a bang, literally, when in one of the first episodes David’s geeky best friend Scott accidentally shoots himself. The only female lifeguard on Baywatch who actually looked like an, um, lifeguard was caught in a storm at sea. Lighting struck her sailboat and the mast crushed her. 168
