NYLON - September 2008 - (Page 82) Ever since hippies stitched peace signs onto their faded blue bell-bottoms, jeans have been just another canvas for fashion lovers’ self-expression. In the ’70s they were flecked with glitter and studs; in the ’80s jeans were slashed; and their ’90s moment came when Tom Ford sent a sequined and feathered style down the Gucci runway—ephemeral, but enough to inspire a Vogue cover featuring a barefoot Madonna wearing jeans with patches and rivets. But, in 2008, who better to take the reins as king of embellished denim and restart the craze? Well, Roberto Cavalli of course. Cavalli debuted his line nearly 40 years ago with a collection that included brocade-emblazoned jeans, and he’s become known for his wild animal patterns and retro silhouettes. “I’ve always been intrigued by how you can change a simple fabric like denim into a more special piece by adding appliqués, embroideries, and prints,” says Cavalli. This season’s incarnation—part of his younger line Just Cavalli’s fall collection, which also includes flamingo-printed maxi dresses and tangerine pantsuits—is this champagne-colored pair, painted from hip to toe with trompe l’oeil wild flowers and golden butterflies.
