NYLON - September 2008 - (Page 90) MARC BY MARC JACOBS IS AS EFFORTLESSLY COOL AS THE LADIES AND GENTS WHO WORSHIP THE LABEL’S UNIQUE DUDS. PHOTOGRAPHED BY TOM WINCHESTER HADARRAH MORE, NEW YORK “The line is consistently full of pieces that perfectly combine edgy and girly. I absolutely love the clothes.” “Girls with style, character, and great spirit… that’s who wears Marc by Marc Jacobs,” declares the designer, who introduced his quirky diffusion line to the masses in 2001. With a mix of mod and retro-inspired pieces—think oversized geometric buttons and large bows, and an accompanying accessories line featuring bags adorned with over-sized buckles and artfully embellished shoes—it’s no wonder the label garners so much attention. Who wouldn’t want to be dressed head-to-toe in Marc by Marc Jacobs? Some of the line’s devotees (walk the streets of NYC for five minutes and you’re bound to see someone wearing one of his creations) include actresses Kirsten Dunst, Rachel Bilson, and Natalie Portman, musicians M.I.A. (who is the face of the current ads) and Meg White, and Jacobs’ longtime friend Sofia Coppola. With its use of vivid colors, bold prints, exaggerated proportions, and layering, the Marc by Marc Jacobs aesthetic has always been statementmaking. Each season, Jacobs creates pieces that are playful and never boring—for fall ’08, he journeyed back to the New Wave look of the ’80s with a super-sized jungle print dress, a leather frock with large collar, structured hopscotch plaid skirts, and a bright pink, billowy satin dress. Jacobs isn’t afraid to be experimental with his designs. After all, he is the man who transformed Perry Ellis into a grunge label for one season. Jacobs has said that he loves to elicit a reaction of love or hate, but that indifference bores him to death. And with both his eponymous line—which seems to excite the critics every season—and Marc by Marc Jacobs, he has succeeded in remaining a designer for whom controversy seems to always be a very good thing.
