NYLON - October 2007 - (Page 30) contributors m att i rw i n “I electrocuted myself once on a shoot and couldn’t use my arm all day,” says photographer Matt Irwin. “Things like that happen to me on a regular basis.” When he has fully functioning limbs, Irwin is a frequent blogger (myspace. com/lesscommonmoresense), and shoots for i-D, Dazed and Confused, and Self Service, in addition to producing his own magazine, Less Common, with a couple of friends. Based in London and a graduate of the London College of Fashion, Irwin shot this issue’s cover story with one thing in mind, “To make Cory and Taylor look hot!” sebasti an k im On his first shoot for NYLON, Brooklyn-based photographer Sebastian Kim traveled to London to photograph French model, Valentine Fillol-Cordier. “There’s nothing like combining work with a little bit, or a lot of fun,” he says. And when the location is your friend’s apartment in East London and the hair and makeup artists also happen to be good friends, the synergy couldn’t be any better. “My friend Ashley’s flat was just filled with girly, vintage knick-knacks that were just so appropriate for Valentine to play with. This shoot wasn’t just about the fashion. It was very much about her and I wanted to keep it light-hearted.” m i chel l e r e n e a u Even though she just joined NYLON this July, market editor Michelle Reneau has been working in fashion since she was 16. “I started working in order to support my clothing addiction,” she says. “My parents thought I had too many clothes. Which of course, was not possible.” Her ever-expanding wardrobe presented the biggest challenge when moving from her home in Orlando, Florida to New York. “I have a tiny apartment that is floor to ceiling packed with clothes and magazines.” Compiling NYLON’s shopping and private icon pages could be seen as the best or most dangerous job for such a fashion addict. Fittingly, her current style icon is Clarissa Darling, from the short-lived Nickelodeon show with a cult-following, Clarissa Explains It All. “She wasn’t afraid to wear everything she owned all at once. I always admired that.” contai ner London-based illustrators Luise Vormittag and Nicola Carter met while studying at Camberwell College of Arts and set up their design partnership, Container, back in 2003. “We have a studio on Vyner Street, in Bethnal Green,” says Vormittag. “It seems very much like its own little world, lots of artists covered in paint, lots of cab repair people covered in motor oil, lots of little galleries, a sweat shop, and an old East End pub.” The duo, who combine illustration with set design, are currently setting up two exhibitions, The Enchanted Forest and A Haunted House. They have previously worked for Time Out, MTV, and Volkswagen. j enny fel d m a n “I’ve always been a voracious reader of magazines—as an adolescent I had pictures of models taped all over my walls and ceiling,” says NYLON’s new fashion features director, Jenny Feldman. “I was hoping I’d grow tall enough to model, but I stopped at 5’2"!” Taking the more academic route into fashion, Feldman graduated from Columbia University with a master’s in English Literature, before embarking on a career in fashion writing, beginning at Elle prior to landing, thankfully, here with us. For this issue, Feldman pinned down two of our favorite It Girls, interviewing Cory Kennedy and Taylor Warren. “They are so sophisticated and world-weary. At that age, I was still excited about keg parties. These girls are already tired of hobnobbing with the rich and famous.” http://myspace.com/lesscommonmoresense http://myspace.com/lesscommonmoresense
