NYLON - October 2007 - (Page 48) ILARIA URBINATI, MILK, L.A. Where did you work before Milk? I was a buyer for Satine and before that I worked for my aunt [the designer] Laura Urbinati. Which are your favorite fashion shows to attend? Derek Lam because it’s so pretty, and Martin Margiela because his clothes are fucking crazy and totally out-there. Any occupational hazards? Overspending. I didn’t really need four tuxedo blazers for fall! What is the most embarrassing item in your closet? I have this gold pleated disco halter dress witch has pompoms hanging from the neck. It’s so bad, but I know I’ll have a roller-skating disco party to go to one of these days. What’s your weekend uniform? LNA tees and Goldschmeid jeans. I never take them off! If you weren’t a buyer, what would you be doing? I used to write for NYLON before fashion ate my soul. For information, see shopatmilk.com. LAUREN THUMLERT, THE ROYAL FAMILY, AUSTIN Why did you decide to open The Royal Family? I like making clothing that I love accessible to the Austin community. How does your personal style fit with the store? Both are about functionality. Austin is very laid-back and very hot—we have to be comfortable. Do you have a favorite designer? Built by Wendy is very playful. Any secret resources? I have a friend who represents female designers in Argentina so she helps with finding jewelry and accessories you can’t find anywhere else. Are you a spendthrift or a splurger? I’m not afraid of the splurge. Most treasured item in your own wardrobe? An elastic waist purple floral mini. I’ve had it since I was 16, but I can’t throw it away, even though the elastic is shot. It’s the skirt I met my husband in!
