NYLON - October 2007 - (Page 86) MIAMI SOUND MACHINE Since its inception, YouTube has spawned millions of viral videos. Most are forgettable but there are a few standouts, usually frantically forwarded throughout schools and workplaces the world over. There is the Star Wars kid, wielding a light saber in his high school’s AV room; the middle-aged mom crooning Boyz II Men’s “I’ll Make Love to You” on a crowded beach with her eyes closed; the comedian who brilliantly boogies through the decades tracking the evolution of dance. And then there are the two girls from Miami who parody Fergie’s summer hit “Fergalicious,” adding hilarious lyrics and instructions on how to be a chonga (a word used to describe Latin girls who sport a signature style much like the one you see here). “Chongalicious” went way beyond YouTube––the duo appeared on Telemundo and their interpretation became an actual hit, topping Miami’s Power 96 charts. The two most important things you need to emulate this look? A steady hand (for lining lids, brows and lips) and some serious cahones! PHOTOGRAPHED BY DANIELLE ST.
