NYLON - October 2007 - (Page 90) OH THE HORROR! THESE THREE WICKEDLY BEAUTIFUL SCREAM QUEENS DON’T NEED HIGH DEFINITION COLOR TO SEND SHIVERS DOWN SPINES. ELSA LANCHESTER IN THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN Few would argue that the most significant beauty moment in horror film history is Elsa Lanchester’s hair-raising turn as the title character in The Bride of Frankenstein (1935). It is a look that Lanchester had to suffer to achieve. To create the elevated hairdo that seemed suspended by electrical current she had a painful mesh cage affixed to her head, and her eyes were taped open for a number of scenes to convey a sense of aghast horror. It’s no wonder then that her piercing screams—reportedly modeled after the wails of London’s Regent Park swans and played backwards in the final cut for extra creepiness—were the stuff of legend. Lanchester herself once said, “The most memorable thing I did in that film, I believe was my screaming. In almost all of my movies since I’ve been called upon to scream. I don’t know if it’s by chance, but I would like to think that I’m not hired for that talent alone.” She definitely wasn’t— Lanchester went on to work in a number of films far removed from the horror genre, and earned multiple Academy Award nominations and a Golden Globe over the course of her career. Though Frankenstein was far from Lanchester’s favorite role, it is the one that her fans will most remember her for.
