Nylon - October 2008 - (Page 50) 1 he-he hello! 2 If you ever wondered how Parker Posey got so good at playing hilariously bitchy characters with a heart of gold, look no further than 1995’s Party Girl. Posey stars as Mary, a blasé bon vivant with racks of designer clothes but no money when it comes time to pay the rent. Mary’s perfect solution to this dilemma? Throw a 8 3 7 4 6 5 1. Too bad she gets busted by the cops and thrown in jail. Enter her matronly librarian godmother, Judy, who bails her out in exchange for Mary’s services as a clerk at the library. Typical fishout-of-water hilarity ensues, although she soon falls in love with the job and even catalogs her DJ roommate’s vast record collection using the Dewey Decimal system. But more entertaining than the plot is Mary’s style. In between delivering priceless lines like, “I would like a nice, powerful, mind-altering substance. Preferably one that will make my unborn children grow gills,” Mary pulls off a baffling look that is at once buttoned-up librarian and eccentric club kid. Decked out in mismatched bright colors and prints—with retro-inspired touches like pussybow collars and ladylike gloves—Mary’s seemingly disparate sartorial choices end up looking perfectly right, proving that, as with most fashionable girls, there is always a method behind the madness.
