Nylon - October 2008 - (Page 92) IN THE PRE-KATE MOSS DAYS, THESE MODELS, WITH THEIR OUTRAGEOUS EXPLOITS AND ECLECTIC PERSONAL STYLE, MANAGED TO CAPTIVATE WAY BEYOND THE RUNWAY. dedicated followers of fashion DONYALE LUNA In the annals of fashion history, Donyale Luna is considered the first African-American supermodel, though she would likely bristle at that title, because over the course of her brief career she was never comfortable with identifying herself as black. Even though birth records prove her race—Luna, nee Peggy Anne Freeman, was born in Detroit in 1945; her abusive father would be murdered when she was a teenager—in interviews she would always concoct stories about her multi-ethnic heritage: In 1968 she told a New York Times reporter that she was Mexican, American Indian, Chinese, and Irish. But all of the mystery shrouding Luna just added to her appeal. At 6’2”, with strikingly sharp features, a penchant for aquamarine contact lenses, and outrageous clothes and makeup (think oversized monkey fur jackets and Winehouse-weight eye liner), the lithesome Luna cut quite the dramatic figure. After gracing the pages of countless fashion magazines and the cover of British Vogue—the first black model to do so—Time magazine dubbed 1966 “The Luna Year,” describing her as a “new heavenly body.” Warhol agreed, and cast the Factory regular in a number of his films, including one mini-feature in which she plays Snow White. Luna also appeared in Fellini’s Satyricon as the lustful witch Oenothea, and, not surprisingly since she did dally with Brian Jones [pictured above], in The Rolling Stones: Rock and Roll Circus. A self-professed LSD-devotee, it was Luna’s hard-partying ways that would prove fatal: She died of a drug overdose in 1979.
