contributors hi l ary w al sh Photographer Hilary Walsh is based out of New York and Los Angeles, and definitely considers herself a city girl. “But I always get these jobs shooting in the woods,” she says, “and then I end up with ticks, poison ivy, or chigger bites.” Photographing Kristen Stewart in a studio for this issue (page 128), thankfully, was nature-free, and Walsh says “All the photos I had seen of Kristen previously looked very tomboy, so we tried to make her a bit more glamorous.” Currently, Walsh is working on a book of photographs of teenagers, which she plans to publish in 2008, and she also shoots for Vogue, Interview, and Jalouse. Walsh says that it would be a dream to train her lens on Michael Pitt, the New York City Ballet, and, she admits, “I’ve always been a closet Billy Corgan fan.” charl es m an n in g Wild horses couldn’t drag Charles Manning away from fashion. Literally. “I was styling a shoot once and the model was trampled by a spooked horse. She was wearing a Vera Wang gown and the horse started stamping all over it,” he recalls. “I rushed in and picked her up and yelled for my assistant to move the dress out from under her. I was so upset about the dress, I don’t even think I asked the model how she was until later.” In addition to styling this month’s Mania about chain stores (page 76), Manning, who got his start three years ago as a NYLON intern, personally crafted the Red Bull collar on page 80. “The Red Bull collar came out of an assisting job I had where I designed a much less amazing necklace for my then-boss,” he says. “Red Bull called me and asked if they could have the piece, but I had thrown it away, so I asked them for 100 cans and told them I would make them something 1,000 times better. I think I did. It’s Bozo meets Queen Elizabeth I.” ni col e m i c h a le k NYLON ’s new art department assistant Nicole Michalek is type-obsessed. After initially studying fashion design at Parsons, she “fell head over heels for typography” and changed her major to graphic design. “Now I can’t read anything without dissecting its design or testing my knowledge of fonts.” Michalek says that her favorite parts of her job are working with the art department and seeing all the photography, but notes “I also found some really obnoxious glitter body lotion in the free box; that was exciting, too.” A native of San Antonio, Texas, her first job was as a caricature artist at Sea World, where she says “I got to see Shamu whenever I wanted. Although, just between us, there is more than one Shamu.” And though Michalek has no qualms about now calling Greenpoint, Brooklyn, home, she does still miss a few things about the Lone Star State: “Good Tex Mex, cows, starry skies, ubiquitous country music, and lightning storms.” troy surra tt One half of the beauty power couple (with hairstylist and boyfriend Nathaniel Hawkins) behind this month’s “I’m Too Sexy ” (page 122), makeup artist Troy Surratt fondly remembers the supermodel glory days that served as the story’s inspiration. “The supermodel era was really a time when those girls, and the crop of beauty people such as Kevyn Aucoin, François Nars, and Oribe, became recognized because they were so exceptional. Today, I feel like every skinny girl can call herself a model, and every young person with a tube of 8 Hour Cream and mascara calls themselves a makeup artist.” A Kansas native, Surratt is a now a global consulting makeup artist for Maybelline New York, and has worked for W, Glamour, and Cosmopolitian, and counts Zooey Deschanel, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and the Olsens as clients. He and Hawkins first met on a shoot five years ago, and, he says, “We have the same aesthetic and an understanding of the way each other thinks. We both find the same things beautiful.” nathani el h a w k in s Nathaniel Hawkins graduated from the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1990. “It was at the height of the supermodel, and every magazine you opened up was full of Cindy, Linda, Naomi It was the first time in my life that I was really paying attention to beauty, and so it made an ever-lasting impression on me of what a glamorous woman is supposed to be.” In this issue, Hawkins, a spokesperson for Tresemmé and resident stylist on Project Runway, worked with his boyfriend, makeup artist Troy Surratt, to recreate some of those iconic looks in “I’m Too Sexy ” (page 122). “We didn’t even need to see pictures,” he says. “We knew all the references by heart.” As for working with Surratt, Hawkins says, “There’s something really special, when you’re being creative, about working with someone you can trust, when you can communicate and create something in sync. I definitely have that with Troy.”
