There are so many new talents to mention—sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte have a radically unusual perspective, crafting romantic, couture-esque dresses with intricate hand-stitching that seem straight out of a whimsical fairy tale. Phillip Lim’s elegant-yet-edgy frocks, jackets, and tapered pants have both prim and quirky girls swooning. And everyone’s latest crush, Alexander Wang, whose recent turn to an unhinged, rocker aesthetic—think beaten-to-a-pulp baggy jean shorts with ripped tights—has us drooling. The list goes on: Doo.Ri, Benjamin Cho, Richard Chai, Vena Cava, Thakoon (which is Michelle Obama–approved, as evidenced by her appearance in the label’s floral kimono number during her husband’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention). It’s all enough to make you take an American flag and sew a gown out of it—if only that was entirely legal.
