Nylon - November 2008 - (Page 68) happy hours Since this is the America issue, I knew that I had to show a bit of national pride when choosing the subject for my monthly column. And while Richard Nixon may not top the list of great American presidents, Nixon Watches has definitely managed to rule over the youth lifestyle market in the 10 years that they’ve been around. So I hop a plane to San Diego (a place I’ve actually never had the pleasure of visiting before), the closest airport to Encinitas, the picturesque coastal city just 40 miles north of the Mexican border that the company calls home. It’s really the perfect setting considering the fact that, besides making totally awesome timepieces, the brand also sponsors a number of professional surfers some of whom I vaguely recall boozing and eating Mexican food with on my first night, alongside the lovely Megan Brunner, Nixon Watches’s public relations and advertising manager. It really makes waking up early to get to my morning meeting at the Nixon Watches factory pretty difficult, but time is, ahem, of the essence, so I don’t complain. Upon entering the headquarters, I quickly realize that Nixon Watches is not your typical buttoned-up company— this place is as laid-back and mellow as the surfers it sponsors. My first order of business is meeting with Chad DiNenna, the company’s cool co-founder and director of marketing, a.k.a the big boss.
