Julian Kay (Richard Gere) may be, as the tagline to director Paul Schrader’s 1980 film American Gigolo says, the “highest paid lover in Beverly Hills,” but Michelle Stratton (Lauren Hutton) doesn’t have to pay him a dime. When the local lothario first lays eyes on elegant Michelle, with her slender frame and matching golden hair and skin, in the lounge of the posh Beverly Hills Hotel, all he sees is a potential client. And she’s not interested at first. But curiousity gets the best of her and Michelle tracks Julian down, offers herself up, and the two begin a torrid affair that soon blossoms into a relationship. A problem considering the fact that Michelle happens to be married to a powerful local politician who, when he gets wind of his wife’s indiscretions, sets out to frame Julian for a murder he didn’t commit. Julian’s previously well-appointed life begins to spin out of control as he struggles to deal with the accusations being lobbed against him—after all, he is a lover, not a fighter. And none of his ladies-who-lunch clientele come to Julian’s aid in his time of need—only Michelle stands by her man, no matter what the consequences are for her marriage.
