2010 ILNY Travel Guide - (Page 52)

GREEN Green travel is feel-good travel and New York has it covered. Green Heart NY, a new program launched on Earth Day this year, is a go-to resource for eco-certified hotels, green restaurants, hybrid car rentals, Top 10 Green NY Destinations, Green NY Hidden Gems, and attractions that support sustainability. Start your green journey here. Naturally Green New York The living is large and human intervention is minimal in a wild kingdom of protected ecosystems throughout the state. Less than an hour from Niagara Falls, the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge Center is an awesome habitat covering more than 10,000 acres. An important nesting and feeding stopover for a chorus of migratory birds, the tranquil sanctuary is also home to mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Overlooks provide views of nesting bald eagles and the marsh below. Another mega-birding rest stop and eagle home base is the 3,000-acre Basha Kill Wildlife Management Area in The Catskills region. This summer, catch nature’s light show on guided sunrise and moonrise walks. Bring your own binoculars or borrow a pair from the visitor’s center at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge’s 7,000-acre spread in the Finger Lakes region. The great blue heron, egrets and eagles, with their seven-foot wingspans, are easy to spot. Other things, like the muskrat houses made of little mounds of cattails, require a closer look. Inside the visitor’s center, watch a live feed of osprey laying, nesting and hatching eggs on the osprey cam. Hiking trails along waterfalls and high peaks provide over-the-top views in the colossal six-million-acre Adirondack Park and the nearly 300,000-acre Catskill Forest Preserve. Hundreds of waterways, from the Long Island shore of Hither Hills State Park to the secluded Long Point State Park on Lake Ontario, add liquid assets to the wealth of natural wonders. 52 • 800/CALL-NYS http://iloveny.com/greenheart
