LETCHWORTH STATE PARK, MOUNT MORRIS GENESEE COUNTRY VILLAGE & MUSEUM, MUMFORD Eleven pristine lakes spread like fingers across the heart of New York. Native American legend says these lakes were left behind when the Great Spirit blessed the land with his hands. Today, we know them as the Finger Lakes. Each lake is connected by rivers to Great Lake Ontario, and all are ideal for fishing, swimming, and boating. With spectacular scenery, the region’s state parks offer great hiking, biking and camping, Visit Letchworth, known as the Grand Canyon of the East; Watkins Glen’s gorges and waterfalls; Taughannock, with waters dropping 400 feet; and the great Chimney Bluffs along Lake Ontario. The legendary Finger Lakes wine trails showcase some of the nation’s premier wineries. In addition to wine tasting, visitors can sample finely-crafted beers, distilled spirits, juices and ciders. You can also follow art trails, the Seaway Trail, and trails along the historic Erie Canal. Natural Choices organic and eco-friendly trails run between Cortland, Ithaca and Owego. Don’t miss the New York Wine & Culinary Center in Canandaigua for a real taste of New York. Or stop by the original Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in Syracuse. Other food firsts in the region include grape pies, ice-cream sundaes, and Rochester’s garbage plates, recently featured on the Food Network’s “The Best Thing I Ever Ate.” Roadside stand and farmers markets offer fresh local produce. The largest is the Windmill Farm & Craft Market near Penn Yan. Complementing all this natural beauty are cities and towns filled with cultural treasures. Just outside Rochester, explore Genesee Country Village, one of the nation’s largest living history museums. Rochester has the Strong National Museum of Play and the George Eastman House & Museum of Photography. Syracuse hosts the annual Great New York State Fair. Corning showcases 3,500 years of glassmaking at the Corning Museum of Glass, and Elmira celebrates its ties to Mark Twain. Nearby, you can explore the National Soaring Museum. Visit the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls to discover how five area women changed the world.
