War of 1812 history comes to life at Fort Ontario, in Oswego, and Sackets Harbor Battlefield.
In Sackets Harbor, the Great Lakes Seaway Trail Discovery Center highlights attractions
along the scenic byway. Named one of the Top 9 Great American Drives, the 518-mile route
connects historic lighthouses, quaint villages, wineries and great outdoor activities at some
of the region’s 28 magnificent state parks.
The fishing is legendary! Anglers come from around the world for trophy-size catches on
Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. Westcott Beach State Park, ideal for fishing, boating,
swimming and hiking, offers camping with spectacular views. Wellesley Island boasts a
wonderful nature center.
Great events on Lake Ontario include Cape Vincent’s French Festival and Oswego’s
Harborfest in July. Alexandria Bay celebrates pirate legends with Bill Johnston’s Pirate
Days every August.
