Explore charming canalside
villages, bike the scenic
Canalway Trail, or paddle
an Olympic-class whitewater
kayaking course—the New York
Canal System offers many
great options for adventure!
Heralded as the Eighth Wonder of the
World, the Erie Canal opened in 1825.
It transformed the wilderness of rural
Upstate New York and opened the West
to development, linking the Port of
New York City with the Great Lakes and
beyond. From its historic origins when
mule-drawn barges traveled this legendary
water route, today’s Canal System has
emerged as a prime tourist attraction.
New York’s 524-mile canal system
now links the Hudson River with Lake
Champlain, Lake Ontario, the Finger
Lakes, the Niagara River and Lake Erie.
Passing through nearly 200 towns and
villages, it presents spectacular scenery,
outdoor fun and hundreds of attractions.
Festive waterside events include the
village of Fairport’s annual Canal Days,
in June.
Four canals—the Erie, the Champlain, the
Oswego and the Cayuga-Seneca—glide
through New York’s heartland. They are
gateways to boating and fishing, hiking
and biking, history and fine dining. You
can explore the canals on scenic cruise
ships, some with sleep-aboard accommodations, or even rent your own authentic
replica canal “narrow boat.”
Low Bridge, Everybody Down
I’ve got a mule, and her name is Sal,
Fifteen miles on the Erie Canal.
She’s a good ol’ worker and a good ol’ pal,
Fifteen miles on the Erie Canal.
We’ve hauled some barges in our day,
Filled with lumber coal and hay,
Part of the 300-mile Canalway Trail
network follows the legendary Erie
Canal from Albany to Buffalo. Passing
through charming and historic waterfront communities, the Erie Canalway
Trail links the cities of Rochester,
Syracuse and Utica. Other sections of
the Canalway Trail follow the Champlain,
Cayuga-Seneca and Oswego canals.
And ev’ry inch of the way we know
From Albany to Buffalo...oh

Low bridge ev’rybody down,
Low bridge for we’re comin’ to a town,
And you always know your neighbor,
You’ll always know your pal,
If you’ve ever navigated on the Erie Can-al
