Civil Rights
Outlawing slavery in 1827, New
York State was at the forefront of the
Underground Railroad movement.
Its strategic location attracted many
Africans fleeing slavery along the eastern
seaboard. Today, tours of historic sites,
which are part of the Path Through
History, include homes of abolitionists,
museums, and other stops along the
routes taken by freedom-seekers.
In Utica, see the church where the New
York State Anti-slavery Society attempted
to convene its inaugural meeting in
1835. The meeting, interrupted, was
subsequently held in nearby Peterboro.
In 1848, John Brown heard of abolitionist
Gerrit Smith’s land grants to help
freed slaves become self-sufficient and
provide them with the property ownership needed to vote. With Smith’s help,
Brown moved his family to a farm in
North Elba, near Lake Placid, to assist
the new settlers. Brown was captured and
executed after leading the violent raid at
Harper’s Ferry, Virginia. His body was
returned and buried on the farm, now the
John Brown State Historic Site.
Harriet Tubman escaped from slavery in
1849, and, on the Underground Railroad,
made 19 trips south to lead over 300
others to freedom. Dedicating her life
to helping former slaves, she was also
active in the women’s rights movement
and AME Zion Church. In 1859, Harriet
contracted a house from Governor
William H. Seward in Auburn, where she
cared for her parents. In 1896, she purchased 25 adjoining acres and the building that became the Harriet Tubman
Home for the Aged. These properties,
now a National Historic Landmark,
honor the brave woman known as the
Moses of Her People.

town of Kinderhook and the Martin Van
Buren National Historic Site. Step inside
Lindenwald, the president’s home, to learn
about the life and times of our eighth
president and visit his gravesite, a short
drive away in Kinderhook Cemetery.
President Millard Fillmore was born
in the Finger Lakes town of Locke in
1800. After serving as a congressman,
New York State comptroller and vice
president, Fillmore ascended to the
presidency in 1850 after the death of
President Zachary Taylor. President
Fillmore’s gravesite is in Buffalo, the
city where he spent the vast majority of
his adult life. His shrine at Forest Lawn
Cemetery is capped by an obelisk
of pink granite. Guided tours of the
cemetery are available.

lifelong home for tours of the house,
gardens, and the Roosevelt Presidential
Library and Museum.
The Path to Women’s Rights
The Women’s Rights Movement was
born in New York State. Path Through
History sites enshrine the valuable
contributions of the women who have
played a significant role in the history of
New York State and the nation.
In July 1848, the struggle for women’s
rights began in Seneca Falls, where
Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott
and more than 300 women and men
gathered for the nation’s First Women’s
Rights Convention. A Declaration of
