With Smith’s help, Brown moved his family to a farm in North Elba, near Lake Placid, to assist the new settlers. Brown was captured and executed after leading the violent raid at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia. His body was returned and buried on the farm, now the John Brown State Historic Site.
