NATURE
You can see intriguing creatures, from birds and butterflies to frogs
and foxes, at hundreds of watchable wildlife sites across the state-
from New York City's Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to the
vast forests and lakes of Allegany State Park in western New York.
Have you ever gone birding? It can
be both thrilling and relaxing.
Some people rise at the crack of
dawn to look for birds, but you can
enjoy birdwatching any time of day!
With amazing natural beauty and
rich diversity, New York boasts
many premier watchable wildlife
sites. Intriguing creatures and
fascinating places are waiting to
be seen and explored. Here are
a few hotspots. Don't forget your
binoculars and camera!
You can explore by car or on foot. A selfguided wildlife drive takes you about
3.5 miles from the visitors center into
the refuge. Five miles of walking trails
run through all of Montezuma's many
wildlife habitats. In addition, the nearby
Montezuma Audubon Center offers
educational programming and numerous
opportunities to experience this incredible wetlands complex. Observation

estimated 1 million birds of more than
240 species, from spotted sandpipers to
