ILNY Travel Guide - Winter 2014/2015 - (Page 19)
COOL CATCHES:
From the Atlantic Ocean to
Great Lake Erie, New York's
world-class winter fishing lures
anglers from near and far!
Winter anglers catch a variety of fish-
perch, pickerel, northern pike and
walleye-in waters across New York.
The lower Niagara River, one of the best
winter trout fisheries on the continent,
has brown trout; rainbow trout (including
steelhead); lake trout; and Atlantic,
Chinook, Coho and pink salmon.
Trophy-sized steelhead winter in the
warmer rapids of Great Lakes tributaries.
In the Thousand Islands-Seaway region,
the Salmon and Oswego rivers boast
spectacular fishing, as do large streams
like the Genesee, Oak Orchard and
Black River. The deepest Finger Lakes
seldom freeze. Shore fishers are drawn
to Watkins Glen Pier on Seneca Lake
and Taughannock Falls State Park on
Cayuga, great for catching landlocked
salmon, brown trout, bass and panfish.

Winter
Fishing
in NY!
The eastern end of Lake Ontario and
the St. Lawrence River gateway offer
some of the nation's best panfish ice
jigging. Near Pulaski in the Thousand
Islands, the Sandy Pond Sportsman's
Association (sandypondsportsmans.com)
and Salmon River Sport Fishing Museum
(salmonriverfishingmuseum.com) sponsor
ice-fishing derbies each February.
Ice-fishing opportunities abound-
from smaller venues like Central New
York's Glimmerglass State Park to
Lake Ontario's Sodus Bay, a 3,000-acre
smörgåsbord of pike, perch and walleye.
You'll need an ice chisel, skimmer, line,
hooks, sinkers and bait-plus layers of
warm clothing! The weather ranges
from blustery cold to spring-like March
days, offering some of the season's most
productive fishing. Be sure to check the
ice for safety.
Black Lake, the largest of the Indian
River Lakes, promises good North
Country ice angling for walleyes,
northern pike and yellow perch. Oneida
Lake is renowned for walleye and perch
"ice-bites." Jig for lake trout and salmon
on Lake George with spectacular
Adirondack Mountain views.
