Everyone is welcome to attend a New York Safe Boating Course! The course can improve the skills of even the seasoned boater. Plus, taking the course sets a good example for kids. And, completing the boating safety course may lead to a reduction in your boater’s insurance premium. General Information for the Student If you are 18 years of age or older. When you have completed your New York Safe Boating Course successfully, your instructor will give you a white temporary safety certificate and the yellow request form for a permanent certificate. You must mail the yellow form to the Bureau of Marine Services, along with your $10.00 processing fee made out to New York State Parks, and in a few weeks you will receive your permanent safety certificate. Carry the white temporary safety certificate with you while boating until your permanent certificate arrives. If you are at least 10 but under 18 years of age. If you lose your permanent boater safety certificate you may obtain a replacement by going to www.nysparks.com and filling out the application for replacement boating safety certificate or making a request in writing to the Bureau of Marine Services at New York State Parks. All requests must include a $10.00 processing fee, made out to New York State Parks, with the request. Send requests for replacement certificates, along with the fee, to: New York State Parks Marine Services Bureau Albany, NY 12238 Old certificates. If you earned a boater safety certificate before 2000 when you were under 18, and are now an adult, you can get a new permanent safety certificate by sending a copy of the original certificate and a $10.00 processing fee made out to New York State Parks to the address above. If you don’t have the original certificate, you must take the course again. Continuing Your Boating Safety Education If you plan to boat frequently, it is highly recommended that you take more advanced boating safety and education courses. The US Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Power Squadrons promote safety afloat through education, and you do not need to be a member to participate. There are other organizations that offer boating safety courses. You can find these organizations on the internet, in your local telephone directory, or ask your local marina about classes in your area. There are courses to suit a variety of needs and interests. You may want to consider a specialized course in:  Aids to navigation  Rules of the road  Charts and compasses  Boating regulations  Marlinespike seamanship  Motorboat handling and trailering practices.
