Lexus says the LS600hl produces 70 percent fewer emissions than other new cars, although the car sacrifices fuel efficiency for the in the ’50s, has risen from the grave with a hybrid dream machine. Its engineers have built the TYPE-D H, a four-seat sports coup that performs like a racecar but consumes like a compact. Because the D weighs in between 1,980 and 2,090 pounds (the frame incorporates carbon fiber and aluminum) it speeds from 0–60 in 6.5 seconds and simultaneously gets an impressive 42 miles per gallon. Like the best hybrids, the 48-volt electric motor kicks in when you hit the accelerator and recoups energy when you brake.
