Air in the cavity of the curtain wall is heated by the sun to provide SHADE (UP) an additional level of insulation. Raising the shades allows light and warmth from the sun to penetrate into the thermal envelope. Lowered shades located outside the thermal envelope absorb energy from the sun, preventing solar heat gain within the building. This system differs from typical window installations primarily by the introduction of an additional layer of glazing. This creates a cavity between the panes, or 'lites' of glass, allowing air to circulate through the system to remove or redirect solar heat gain. In summer, heat absorbed by integral shades helps prevent heat gain within the building, whereas a typical window installation with shades mounted in a room's interior would allow such heat gain to increase the room's temperature, increasing cooling loads. The system diagrammed above is intended to provide the maximum performance with the minumum depth within a single system. Access for cleaning and maintenance is gained through operable casement sections in each apartment. There are both active and passive double-glazed curtain wall systems. Passive systems, such as the one shown here, use natural convection to vent unwanted heat in summer, or to provide an additional level of insulation in winter. 30 [ O 2 G R E E N M A G A Z I N E .
