O2 - Issue 2 - (Page 6) [LETTER] A WORLD GOING GREEN Since the inaugural issue of O2, Riverhouse now rises above Rockefeller Park and the Hudson. Yet while the business of constructing this condominium nears completion and people move in, the work of maintaining and nurturing a green living environment here is ongoing. Living with and among the natural world doesn't stop at buying an ecologically friendly residence, taking the subway instead of a cab, or carrying a hemp bag to the market. Sustainable living means keeping pace with a world that hasn’t gone green but rather is “going” green, hardly a static process. The materials, building practices, and environmental guidelines at Riverhouse have raised the bar for sustainable construction, and we are committed to transferring our eco building ethos to the practice of living at Riverhouse. That is why we have recycled water, air and water purification, solar panels, landscaped roof terraces, an on-site organic bakery, and three Zipcars in our garage. We also house a branch of the New York Public Library, where you can easily keep abreast of the rapid changes and improvements in building and living green. In this issue, we provide a preview of designer Thom Filicia's all-green home at Riverhouse, proof that sustainable design is beautiful, modern, and luxurious. In "The Glass is Greener," architect Todd Schliemann of Polshek Partnership explains Riverhouse’s unique triple-paned double-glazed curtain wall system, an innovative energy-efficient technology that makes its debut in an American residential building. This issue of O2 features hybrid cars, responsible skincare, and organic wine but more importantly, it pays homage to 50 people who continue to raise environmental awareness, conceive and implement green technology and practices, and embrace the simple yet vital concept of respecting the natural world. Riverhouse is the Sheldrake Organization's first green development project. As a builderdeveloper, the process of building Riverhouse has been very rewarding and humbling, and it has given us an even greater respect for sustainable development. By following the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) guidelines for a Platinum rating, we have created a unique, beautiful product from the inside out. At the dawn of the 21st century, sustainability is a signature flourish, a burgeoning phenomenon, and yes, even a political statement. My hope is that someday, making the right environmental choices will be so widespread as to be routine. Best Regards, 2 Creative Director Fabrice G.
