SUNY Orange Viewbook - (Page 8) S hA re eXperienCeS Are your friends important to you? Do you like to be involved in fun activities where you feel part of a group? Don’t let people tell you there is no “campus life” at a community college. SUNY Orange students enjoy a vibrant array of campus happenings, including student government, academic clubs, service organizations, athletics and intramurals. And if you can’t find a club you want, you are free to form one with fellow students who share your same interests. Many of the student organizations are clubs formed within academic disciplines, allowing students within those programs to develop out-of-the-classroom experiences that help shape their learning. The architecture club tours interesting and unique local sites, the biology club has organized Earth Week events at the College and the computer club has assisted College staff and faculty in presentations and at events. If leadership is in your blood, you can seek election to the Student Senate, where you will actively contribute to student initiatives, or join the SUNY Orange Ambassadors, a highly visible group that assists the Admissions Office by providing a student presence at many College events. In addition to sharing activities that amplify your student experience, many clubs will offer you the chance to give back to your community through a myriad of service events. As a SUNY Orange student, your experiences are limited only by your own boundaries. pe rForm in the ArtS Are you a performer at heart? If you like the spotlight, you can shine as part of the Apprentice Players, the College’s theatre group. Or, you can find a home in one of several performance ensembles (madrigal singers, orchestra, symphonic band, jazz band or choir) directed by the Arts and Communication Department. The orchestra and symphonic band practice and conduct concerts at Middletown’s historic Paramount Theatre. Both groups are comprised of SUNY Orange students as well as community members who share a passion for music and performing. Many of the remaining performance ensembles play in the College’s Orange Hall Theatre. Occasionally, college groups will also perform throughout Orange County during the holidays and at special events. The newly formed online student radio station, Colt Rock Radio, offers on-air opportunities that will bring your talents to a world-wide audience. Athle t iC eXC el l enCe Are you driven by competition? Do you enjoy being part of a team? If so, your athletic career does not have to end when you enroll at SUNY Orange. The College offers intercollegiate athletic teams for men in tennis, basketball, baseball, soccer and golf; and for women in volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball. There is also an intramural program open to all students. If you’ve enjoyed “on the field” success in the past, it is likely you will continue your winning ways as a SUNY Orange Colt. Most of the College’s athletic teams have built reputations for success by capturing numerous conference, district and regional championships, as well as advancing to national championship tournaments. As you investigate the College’s athletic program, don’t forget to inquire about our athletic scholarships. honorS progrAm Are you an above-average student? If you are looking for a challenging academic program, you may be a candidate for the SUNY Orange Honors Program. The Honors Program offers highly motivated and talented students opportunities for personal growth, educational discovery and academic achievement through advanced coursework, community service and an independent research project. Its goal is to help students build self-confidence by tackling new academic challenges, becoming leaders on campus and in their community, and establishing a foundation for success in future academic and professional endeavors. Scholarship opportunities exist for Honors Program students as well. 8
