LENT TRIDUUM EASTER Columba Kelly, OSB Christopher Walker The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to John The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to John One of the world’s most respected Gregorian chant experts, Benedictine Father Columba Kelly has set the current Lectionary text for St. John’s Passion to the traditional, ancient tone for this proclamation. Perfected through years of use at St. Meinrad Archabbey, this solemn, accessible setting for Good Friday is now available for widespread use in parishes and other communities. Combining ancient and modern styles, Father Kelly’s setting stands out for its ingenious adaptation of the traditional chant to the inflections and rhythms of modern English. The music is conveniently divided into scenes to assist the singers when practicing and proclaiming the Passion. Singing parts are for two narrators (medium voice), Christus (bass), and various individuals (tenor or soprano). Group parts, such as the crowd and the soldiers at the cross, may be sung in unison but have optional three-part choral settings, as featured on the CD. All parts are a cappella. An excellent rehearsal tool, the beautifully recorded CD makes inspiring devotional listening, especially during Lent. “The words of the text should communicate the vitality and mystery of the Lord’s Passion and Death,” explains Benedictine Father Harry Hagan in the introduction. “An over-wrought presentation calls attention to itself instead of the text while a tepid approach belies the power of the words. The proclamation need only reveal the power of the words.” Simple, poignant and meticulously crafted, Father Kelly’s setting does just that, showcasing the mystical power of St. John’s Passion. Choral Octavo [full score] (20042GV) $5.95 CD (20016GV) $13.00 This innovative setting of the Passion is powerful, tender and haunting. It was composed to give added meaning and power to the Passion reading on Good Friday. The CD makes an excellent preparation and rehearsal tool, in addition to being inspirational listening for Lent. In “this contemporary setting of Christ’s Passion the choir (or congregation) sings simple reflective refrains, similar to Bach’s use of chorals and arias in his Passion. The work is through composed. Walker employs mild dissonance in this setting, which is accessibly modern. Though technically not difficult and only 28 1/2 minutes in length, it evokes a depth of feeling and spiritual impact commensurate with the gravity of the subject, making it ideal for the ‘average’ church group. This recording may also be used as a rehearsal tool.” —The American Organist “I was very impressed by the singing of the Passion at St. Mary’s Cathedral on Good Friday. It was one of the best and most meaningful Good Friday experiences I have ever had. It’s hard to believe that the music was written just last year. Blessings to Christopher Walker for composing a contemporary setting perfectly suited to the flow of this ancient text.” —Margaret S., Portland, OR Full Score [with part for Jesus] (12045GV) $4.95 Choral/Assembly Edition (12046GV) $2.00 CD (12044GV) $13.00 ocp.org/12044GV Randall DeBruyn The Passion of Our Lord According to St. John This was the first setting to include traditional hymn acclamations, such as “O Sacred Head, Surrounded” and “Were You There,” at key points throughout the Passion. By providing these opportunities to respond, musically and emotionally, it transforms the assembly from spectators to fully engaged participants. The popular contemporary edition features an accessible three-part, SAB arrangement with guitar and piano accompaniment and instrument parts. Includes soloist parts for Jesus, Pilate, Peter and Narrator.
