Another vital source of community service in the United States is the ONS chapters. More than 12,600 ONS members belong to one of the 220-plus chapters across the United States (ONS, n.d.). These members promote quality cancer care in their community through various efforts such as cancer awareness campaigns, screening and prevention programs, and educational outreach endeavors. In 2006, ONS chapters were involved in more than 500 community events and reached more than one million people. ONS’s vision is to lead the transformation of cancer care, and chapters are a vital component to that vision’s success. By reaching out, ONS chapters demonstrate commitment to advancing cancer care through the development of innovative outreach programs in their communities. focusing on Community Trends and Needs ONS Columbus Chapter member Teresa Roblee, RN, OCN®, disease management coordinator for hematologic malignancies at Ohio State University Medical Center’s James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, says it’s important to be in touch with the ever-changing needs of the community. “Columbus has become quite a melting pot of cultures, and our chapter’s Community Outreach Committee has kept abreast of this change,” says Roblee. “Given our diverse population, we have reached out to partner with other organizations such as the Black Nurses Association, the Ohio Hispanic Coalition, and the Asian community to address our community’s healthcare needs, with a focus on prevention and early detection.” ONS New Hampshire/Vermont Chapter member Mary R.
