ONENURSE’SpERSpECTivE How Has Your Chapter Coordinated a Community Partnership Program? Central Jersey Chapter Helps Increase Awareness of Lung Health Mary A. Brandsema, RN, BSN, OCN® In 2005, more than 300 young people participated in the ONS Central Jersey Chapter’s Save Your Breath Campaign. Mary A. Brandsema, RN, BSN, OCN®, president-elect of the ONS Central Jersey Chapter, talks about how her chapter reaches out to the local community through the Save Your Breath Campaign. e decided to implement the Save Your Breath Campaign to help meet the ONS Central Jersey Chapter’s strategic goals that follow the agenda of Healthy People 2010. The goals are to expand public awareness efforts, which contribute to quality cancer care, and to meet ONS’s strategic goal of promoting healthy lifestyles and reducing cancer risk. W In 2003, chapter board member Matt Nye, RN, OCN®, received a $500 grant to implement a community education program through the chapter. He was assisted by chapter board members Christine Murphy, RN, OCN®, and Brenda Dubuss, RN, OCN®; they agreed that tobacco addiction is almost always acquired in adolescence. The chapter implemented the project with the Brick, NJ, Police Athletic League in November 2003 and the Brick Municipal Alliance Committee (B-MAC) on Alcoholism, Drug Abuse, and Youth Services. As part of the Save Your Breath Campaign, the Central Jersey Chapter joins with B-MAC in its annual youth dance. Between songs, they present 10-minute PowerPoint® presentations, and the youth get to volunteer for role-playing activities, such as blowing on pinwheels with stirring straws so that they get the sensation of emphysema. In 2006, B-MAC presented the Central Jersey Chapter with a proclamation by the mayor of Brick recognizing the chapter for its efforts. The two main challenges we face are money and meeting the unexpected turnout of kids every year. In 2005, more than 300 young people participated in all of the activities.
