ONS Connect - January 2008 - (Page 16) YOUTEllUS What Successful, Ongoing Partnership Does Your Chapter Have With the Community? Chapter Reaches Out to Community Nursing Students or the past three years, our chapter has sponsored a pizza dinner for senior nursing students from two local colleges. We have representatives from all aspects of oncology nursing talk about their career paths in oncology nursing, what they do in their jobs, and what they love about oncology nursing. Nurses speak from inpatient oncology nursing, outpatient, chemotherapy infusion, hospice nursing, and clinical research, and a nurse practitioner talks about advanced practice. The event is always well attended, and the students have lots of enthusiasm and interest. We promote it not as a job fair but rather to interest students in choosing oncology as their clinical specialty. Several students have chosen oncology as their senior elective rotation as a result of our presentation. F their professional skills, chapter members share their avocation skills—one of our members teaches quilting in the evenings at Gilda’s Club. Finally, our chapter hosted our annual health education fair at Gilda’s Club. Linda F. Kennelly, PhD, RN New York Capital District Chapter Cambridge, NY lung Cancer walk helps Chapter make a Difference he Every Breath Counts Walk for Lung Cancer Awareness began as a chapter grassroots effort in January 2006. A committee was formed; 10 months later, with more than 100 walkers and numerous sponsors and volunteers, we were able to raise more than $16,000. Funds were donated to the LUNGevity Foundation and South Jersey Cancer Fund, an organization that supports people with cancer in southern New Jersey. The event is a testament to the power that oncology nurses have to join togeth- er to make a positive difference in their community. Louise M. The event will recognize and celebrate the the lives of Houston-area survivors whose length of life or quality of life has been enhanced by progresses in cancer treatment and research.
