With advocacy, we have the opportunity to influence health care through the regulatory and legislative process. Communication and influence through the media also are imperative, because the media affects how the general public thinks. Often the media will portray nurses in a negative manner, such as “sex objects, battleaxes, [or] handmaidens, . . . often crediting physicians for work that nurses do in real life” (www.nursingadvocacy.org/action/center_work_flyer.pdf). Nurses need to know how to work with the media to influence and build a strong positive image of professional nurses. The following resources can assist you with nursing advocacy. ✱ Deborah Braccia, RN, MPA, OCN ® Title ONS Legislative Action Center URL www.ons.org/lac/index .shtml Description Your gateway to information and resources on health policy advocacy ONStat Program www.ons.org/lac/onstat .shtml A great way to support ONS’s activities in Washington, DC, where your Society is continuously working to advance the ONS Health Policy Agenda at the national level Provides tools for promoting oncology nursing ONS Web Site Quality Cancer Care Clinical Resource Area Center for Nursing Advocacy www.ons.org/clinical/ Professional/ QualityCancer www.nursingadvocacy.org Seeks to increase public understanding of the central, frontline role nurses play in modern health care; promotes more accurate, balanced, and frequent media portrayals of nurses and increases the media’s use of nurses as expert sources Helps people become more competent and comfortable in front of an audience by offering a way to practice and hone communication and leadership skills An excellent and succinct media outreach kit Toastmasters International www.toastmasters.org U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration www.nhtsa.dot.gov/people/ outreach/SafeSobr/19qp/ sect1/page4.html Visit ONS Connect Online for Active Links Don’t want to type all of the Web Connect URLs into your browser?
