ONS Connect - January 2008 - (Page 28) Are You Up to the Challenge? Your Vote for ONS Leaders Makes a Difference [By Judith M. DeGroot, RN, MSN, AOCN ®, ONS Nominating Committee] s an ONS member, your vote does count and does make a difference in mapping the future direction of ONS. Are you up to the responsibility and challenge? In an organization of more than 35,000 members, how does one vote make a difference? Your vote • Shows your commitment to the mission and vision of ONS • Demonstrates your concern about the organization and its future, as well as the future of oncology nursing • Strengthens ONS’s participation in national dialogues on healthcare policy • Recognizes the talents, hard work, and commitment of the candidates • Ensures that candidates will be highly qualified • Represents a very important person— a knowledgeable, compassionate oncology nurse. A ONS offers three $1,000 awards for the small, medium, and large chapters that have the highest chapter member voting percentages. The 2007 winners were Illiana (92.3%), Bucks-Montgomery Counties, PA (47.7%), and Metro Minnesota (46.3%). Congratulations! The chapters identified several ideas that may encourage members to vote. • Remind members to vote at each chapter meeting (use “remember to vote” table cards and post a reminder notice at the sign-in table). • Make personal phone calls to chapter members, reminding them to vote. • Advise members that if your chapter wins the $1,000 award, it will be used as two additional $500 ONS Congress or Institutes of Learning scholarships. • Direct chapter members to the ONS Web site to improve their knowledge about the candidates. • Stress how easy the electronic voting system is to use. Implementing even one or two of the suggestions may improve your chapter’s chance of winning one of the $1,000 scholarships. Take that challenge on! ✱ Have You Received Your Ballot? All ONS members with active e-mail addresses should have received an electronic ballot, and members without computer access should have received a paper ballot via regular mail. If you have not received either an electronic or paper ballot, contact the Membership/Leadership Team at election@ ons.org or call 866-257-4ONS (412-859-6100). 37,193 ONS Members x $25 Each = $929,825 to Sustain Your Profession! The ONS Foundation needs your help as it reaches the end of the Silver Anniversary Campaign and the goal of a $10,000,000 endowment. Currently, it is $654,110 short of that goal. You can get help reach that goal! If every member donates $25 to the campaign, the ONS Foundation will surpass its goal. The ONS Foundation provides financial support to meet your needs through education, leadership, and research grants. The ONS Foundation believe in you as you work to improve cancer care and the lives of every patient with cancer. Your participation in the campaign is a statement of your belief in the ONS Foundation. Please send your tax-deductible $25 donation to the ONS Foundation’s Silver Anniversary Campaign, P.O. Box 3258, Pittsburgh, PA 15230-3258, or donate online at www.onsfoundation.org.
