ONS Connect - January 2008 - (Page 31) STAYiNGONTOp Perform Active Job Searches to Locate the Job You Want [By Elisa Becze, BA, ONS Staff Writer] ob hunting should be considered a second full-time occupation, because the most successful job seekers actively look for jobs instead of passively waiting for jobs to come to them. How can you make the most of your active job search? Consider incorporating one or more of the following ideas. • Stay up to date on oncology nursing news. You’ll notice hiring trends and will be able to better direct your job search. Plus, your knowledge of current nursing news will not only impress potential employers during interviews J but also may help you in your practice. • Get out and network. Attend your local ONS chapter meeting, talk with the members, and pass on your contact information. You will be on their minds when positions open at their workplaces. • Use the Internet for active job searching. Take advantage of the “search agent” feature that many online job boards offer to build a profile for your ideal job and notify you by e-mail when that job is available. • If you really want to work for a spe- cific institution or company, contact it directly and ask about unadvertised open positions. Even if the institution doesn’t have any openings, send your resume anyway and ask for it to be kept on file so it will be handy when the right position does open up. Keep in mind that active job searches hit the job market from many angles, so you’ll be better able to keep track of your activities if you maintain detailed records of the material you send out, the people you contact, and your plans for follow-up. ✱ Get Connected Through ONS Special Interest Groups Join Your Free SIG Today ONS special interest groups (SIGs) connect you with other members practicing in the same area as you so that you can learn from each other and share ideas and information.
